In 2009 I was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis (MS). In hopes of making sense of such an unpredictable disease, and with a journalism career creating a great foundation to do so, I began writing about MS for the highly-respected Barts MS Blog linked to Queen Mary, University of London. I have since written for publications such as The BMJ, Annals of Neurology and Neurology.
I participate in various research studies and have become a patient advocate - particularly interested in the impact of gender and ethnicity in the diagnosis and treatment of neurological disorders.
I am founder of the Rachel Horne Prize for Women's Research in MS; an annual award of $40,000, which recognises a woman scientist for their outstanding contribution to women's health-related research in the disease. In partnership with the International Women in MS (iWiMS), the European Committee for Treatment and Research in Multiple Sclerosis (ECTRIMS) and Americas Committee for Treatment and Research in multiple Sclerosis (ACTRIMS).
